What is Houzz?
Houzz is a free online resource for all things property design; a website, photo library and community. It’s a highly visual source of inspiration and information for people looking to build or renovate their homes. You can use it as a source of ideas, as a tool to find design professionals, as an online mood board creator.
Arriving in the UK in 2014, Houzz now has 2 million users on these shores, and 40 million worldwide. Built around high quality photos of projects from across the globe, there’s a huge library you can browse through – all indexed properly, be it lounge, kitchens, chairs etc.
Houzz also works fantastically on your mobile or tablet, with an extremely easy to use interface.
Ideabooks
A bit like online pinboard Pinterest, Ideabooks acts as a library for your to allow you to collate and categorise all your images and inspirations, add notes and share them. The best way is to just dive in and have a good old nose around. Beware, it is addictive!
Product Research
On many images you’ll see little green tags appear – if you click on these, it will bring up details on the product e.g. where to buy it, price, similar items etc. This can be locally, regionally or worldwide too!
Find Local Professionals
One of our favourite things about Houzz is the ability to search for local professionals in your area, from architects and designers, to builders and tradesmen. Many will also have examples of their work and projects they have been involved in too.
Community
Houzz has one final amazing resource at its disposal – you, the user! The ‘advice’ message boards are a goldmine of information from people asking all kinds of questions about property and design and build. There’s also the option to join in with live chat discussions on certain subjects!
Hopefully that’s a useful introduction to the basics of Houzz. There are many other ways of researching, gathering and sharing inspiration like Pinterest, but Houzz is dedicated to homeowners looking to build or renovate their houses. It’s free, so if you’re working on a project or thinking of starting one, why not dive in and see if it’s useful for you.
